Wykeham’s Big Read 2026 runs from Monday 19th January to Friday 6th March and we’d love everybody to get involved!
We are setting a challenge for all children from Year Reception to Year 6 to read one book a week - that is six books in six weeks. Children can borrow books from their class or local library. They can also access books from the online platform Reading Eggs - every child in the school has their own personal login.
It’s really easy for you to get involved! Reading with your child and discussing the books they like will develop their confidence and make them better learners in all subjects. Reading for pleasure is great fun for the whole family too. Reading for pleasure is a hot topic on the Literacy agenda as it not only creates a love of reading in young people but makes a huge contribution to their educational attainment.
Please use the Big Read Record Sheet with your child so that they can meet the challenge and receive a certificate at the end of the six weeks!
At the end of our Big Read challenge, we will celebrate World Book Day on Friday 6th March 2026. We will encourage all children to dress as their favourite book character. Please talk to your child about the character that they would like to come dressed as. Do pose questions to ensure that they have a good understanding of their chosen character and if possible, get creative with your child/children to make props that represent the character.
We also have some more exciting challenges for your children. We would love for you to encourage them to complete as many of the challenges as they can. We look forward to them sharing their completed challenges with us at school.
